Professor Joëlle Anne Moreno is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania Law School, Swarthmore College, and (most importantly for a native New Yorker) Stuyvesant High School. Before beginning her academic career, she served as a federal prosecutor for the United States Department of Justice.

Professor Moreno served as the College of Law’s first Associate Dean for Faculty Research & Development. She is an experienced teacher of Evidence, Scientific and Forensic Evidence, Criminal Procedure, Criminal Law, Criminal Advocacy, and Alternative Dispute Resolution. Professor Moreno’s research and scholarship focuses on evidence, constitutional law, and criminal justice issues and includes articles that have appeared in the Boston University, Florida, Penn State, Ohio State, William & Mary Bill of Rights, Arizona, Tulane, Utah, and Akron law reviews. Her interdisciplinary work has also been published in the Journal of Pediatric Endocrinology and Metabolism and Pediatric Radiology, As a firm believer that academic work should have real world impact, Professor Moreno examines problems that include the socio-legal implications of the declining importance of empirical evidence and growing acceptance of specious or speculative information by courts and the public. Her research includes the spread of false information in child abuse cases and by the Anti-Vaxx movement, the lack of scientific support for new marijuana policymaking, and extralegal scientific policymaking by the Supreme Court. She regularly presents her work to global interdisciplinary audiences including meetings of: the American Academy of Pediatrics; the International Congress on Child Abuse and Neglect; the Society for Pediatric Radiology; Penn State Medical Center; the World Vaccine Congress; INTER-CAP (an International Course on Child Abuse Pediatrics); the U.S. Court of Federal Claims (Vaccine Court); the European Society of Pediatric Radiology; the Ray E. Helfer Medical Society; and the Immunization Law & Policy Collaboration. Professor Moreno has also presented her work at numerous legal academic conferences and bar association conferences. Professor Moreno presents bar grading workshops for the National Conference of Bar Examiners and serves on the Child Abuse Committee of the Society for Pediatric Radiology and the International Advisory Board of the National Center on Shaken Baby Syndrome. She is also a past member of the AALS Membership Review Committee, the Uniform Bar Examination Essay Examination Drafting Committee, and is a past chair of the AALS Evidence Section.
