Alumna Mary “Katie” Berney ’19 has recently been promoted to First Lieutenant after graduating from the 10-week Naval Justice School (NJS) Basic Lawyer Course, which is her last step before going to a unit. This US Navy JAG Corps program trains the Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard judge advocates in the fundamentals of military justice and relevant civil law, with particular attention to administrative law, investigations, legal assistance and military justice. In the Marine Corps, lawyers get their years of constructive credit for law school at the end of NJS.

She is now in the final week of the Military Justice Orientation Course (MJOC) at NJS. MJOC is a course required for USMC, Navy, and Coast Guard judge advocates that dives deeper into military justice issues.
