Prof. Carpenter brought together 20 instructors from Florida and around the country to teach 66 Florida capital defenders about the Morgan method of voir dire, a capital-specific method of voir dire that is based in social psychology and informed by the findings of the Capital Jury Project. This method focuses on ways to bring life votes out of the deliberation room.

In the post-Hurst era in Florida, where death verdicts must now be unanimous, capital defense counsel who use this method greatly increase the chance that their clients will receive a life without parole penalty rather than the death penalty.

In addition to organizing the event, Prof. Carpenter taught several plenary sessions and small group breakouts.

Professor Carpenter has been a faculty member of the National College of Capital Voir Dire since 2011. Visit for more information
