Summer 2016 FIU Law Public Interest Law Grant

Through the generosity of FIU Law students, faculty, and administration who donated their time and resources to the 2016 FIU Law Public Interest Auction, FIU Law proudly announces the 2016 Summer Public Interest Law Grant (PILG) Program.  The PILG Program is open to students engaged in unpaid law work in non-profit law offices, government agencies, judicial chambers, and public-interest agencies during Summer 2016.  The grants will range from $500 to $2000, depending on need.  Students will be selected by a faculty committee based on the strength of their personal statements and their demonstrated financial need.

Eligibility:

  • You must be an enrolled FIU Law student in good academic standing.
  • You must have, at the time of application, a confirmed placement for Summer 2016 at an approved non-profit law office, government agency, judicial chambers, or public-interest agency.
  • You may not receive any compensation from the placement.
  • You may still apply for a PILG even if you are receiving grant money for the placement from another (non-FIU Law) grant provider.
  • You must perform legal work at the placement for at least 200 hours over the summer.
  • You must have unmet financial need, as determined by the FAFSA Student Aid Report.
  • You are not eligible to receive a PILG if you are receiving externship course credit for your work at the placement.

To apply:

  • Submit a typed personal statement to afridman@fiu.edu that describes the placement (including the employer, the location of the work, the type of work, and the length of the placement), and how the PILG will assist you in offsetting the cost of the placement.  The personal statement should also describe how the placement will assist you in your career goals.  The personal statement should not exceed 500 words.
  • Submit a completed PILG application online.
  • Submit a copy of your offer letter to afridman@fiu.edu.

All application materials for the PILG must be submitted by May 1, 2016.
