The anticipation was building as a group of FIU Law students visited Washington, D.C. for a transformative experience during spring break 2024. Their journey began with a warm welcome at FIU in DC. They were welcomed by Carlos A. Becerra, Associate Vice President Government and Community Affairs and FIU Law Alum Willard Sheppard.
Thursday, February 29
The day kicked off at 8:00 am where students embarked on a series of Hill visits that offered a unique glimpse into the intricacies of legislative affairs.
Their morning started with meetings at the Cannon House Office Building, where they engaged with influential figures such as Charles Cadden, Legislative Correspondent for Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, and Cesar Gonzalez, Chief of Staff for Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart. The students gained insights into the legislative process and political dynamics that shape the nation. They crossed paths and had a quick chat with Congresswoman Maria Elvira Salazar.
A highlight of the day was the noon visit to the U.S. House of Representatives Gallery, followed by a meeting with Sheyla Marimon, Legislative Director for Rep. Steven Horsford.
That afternoon, the students explored the world of workplace consulting and global research at Gallup Headquarters. FIU Law alumnus William “Bill” Kruse, General Counsel at Gallup, provided valuable perspectives on the intersection of law and business.
The day concluded with a tour of the Library of Congress at the Thomas Jefferson Building.
Friday, March 1
First on the agenda was the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). Students had the chance to explore SEC careers and tour the SEC Building. The highlight of the morning was a meeting with SEC Commissioner Jaime Lizarraga.
Afterward, the students visited the U.S. Supreme Court for a memorable lunch, immersing themselves in the epicenter of judicial authority.
In the afternoon, the FIU Law students delved into the intricacies of the Department of Justice (DOJ) with a panel discussion at the U.S. Department of Justice. The day concluded with a joint session at the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), where they interacted with esteemed figures such as Lynn Rosenthal, Director of Sexual and Gender Violence, and Debbie-Anne Belcher, Deputy Chief Counsel.
