FIU Law Alumnus, and Patent attorney, Roberto M. Suarez ’11 has merged his transactional intellectual property practice with the full-service intellectual property law firm of Espinosa Trueba Martinez, P.L., and has joined the firm as a partner. The award-winning intellectual property boutique focuses in patent, trademark, copyright and other intellectual property litigation and prosecution. With this addition, the firm now has a total of 8 attorneys.

Suarez’s practice centers around the identification, creation, and protection of Intellectual Property rights for startups, entrepreneurs, and established corporations. His clients include tech startups, manufacturers, athletes, and entertainers. He specializes in Patent Law and serves clients in all types of Intellectual Property matters such as Trademark, Copyright, and Trade Secrets. He is a U.S. registered Patent Attorney who brings over 15 years of engineering experience to his Patent Prosecution practice. An inventor in his own right, he has developed innovative products for the aviation, marine, consumer electronics, and mobile devices industries. Suarez is admitted to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office as well as the State Bar of Florida and the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida.

Previously the principal of the Law Office of Roberto M. Suarez, P.L. in Coral Gables, Suarez taps into his deep knowledge of manufacturing and business methods, as well as his grasp of complex technical concepts, to hone in on the most nuanced innovations in order to capture the broadest patentable inventions and distinguish the finer points in a claim. Technical areas of expertise include mobile devices, consumer electronics, aircraft structures, marine/ fishing equipment, injection molding, CNC machining, sheet metal fabrication, and software/ process flow charts. Prior to establishing his firm, Suarez worked for Motorola Mobility (at the time, a Google company) where he researched and drafted responses to patent office actions, as well as having worked with designers and engineers in the drafting of invention disclosures on new technologies.

Fluent in English and Spanish, Suarez earned his Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering as well as his Juris Doctor degree from Florida International University. Locally, he has been a guest lecturer at the Pino Center for Entrepreneurship, as well as speaking at local bar and community associations on “Representing Startups”. Suarez serves on the Board of the Miami Catholic Lawyer’s Guild, is a past board member of the FIU Law Alumni Association and the Dade County Bar Association/Federal Bar Association’s Mindfulness in Law Joint Task Force, and is active in the Belen Alumni Lawyers’ Section.

Espinosa Trueba Martinez, P.L. was founded by intellectual property attorneys Jorge Espinosa and William R. Trueba, Jr. in 2008. Elio F. Martinez, Jr. joined the firm as a named partner in 2015. He is a commercial litigator whose practice focuses on intellectual property litigation, specifically infringement of trademarks, patents and copyrights, as well as protection of trade secrets.
