During the weekend of January 30 – February 1, FIU Law’s Moot Court Team competed in the Susan Ferrell Intercultural Human Rights Moot Court Competition which was held at St. Thomas University. The competition uses a simulated court proceeding and requires teams to represent both sides of the argument. The teams  prepare written pleadings with respect to an international human rights law and policy fictional problem. The teams present their arguments in an oral argument before the International Court of Justice.

FIU Law brought home the runner-up trophy and finished second to Duke University. Team members included: Camilo Rodriguez; Justin Maya; Daniel Rock; Franco Bacigalupo (brief writer) and Amanda Torres (orator).  Daniel Rock was named Best Orator with one judge commenting that he was, “ready for appellate practice today!” Camilo Rodriguez was recognized a 5th Place Orator, with Amanda Torres placing 6th (tie) and Justin Maya placing 10th. This was the first time FIU Law has placed all orators in the top 10 in a competition! The team also received the runner-up trophy for Best Memorials.

The team was coached by Interim Assistant Dean for Students & Assistant Professor of Legal Skills and Values Angelique Ortega Fridman and during practice rounds, Professors Eric Carpenter, Raul Ruiz and David Walter served as judges.
