Professor H. T. Smith recently gave the Keynote Address at the Black History Month Celebration by the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Florida. With his theme, “African Americans in Times of War,” Professor Smith presented short stories from three American wars — the War of 1812, where attorney Francis Scott Key, watching the Battle of Fort McHenry, penned “The Star Spangled Banner,” which included a lesser-known third stanza celebrating the deaths of slaves; World War II, where the heroic, all-Black Tuskegee Airmen (the “Red Tails,” named after the markings on the noses and rudders of their P-51s), who shot down 261 and earned 150 Flying Crosses; and the Vietnam War, where Professor Smith told of his personal history serving as a combat officer.
