Ms. Fonseca is a member of the FIU Trial Team and was the organization’s Vice President.
The Alvarez scholarship recognizes student excellence in trial advocacy — in the classroom, courtroom, and community — and is named for nationally renown, Coral Gables-based trial lawyer Alex Alvarez, a significant FIU Trial Advocacy Program benefactor.
Sahara’s award was given as part of this year’s Great Legal Storytellers program, which featured Florida rights restoration champion, and Time Magazine Top 100 Most Influential People of 2019, Desmond B. Meade.

“Out of all my classes and all other organizations and associations, participating on Trial Team and being an active member of our Trial Advocacy Program have been the most rewarding experiences for me in law school,” Sahara noted. “Working weekdays after class and almost every weekend, I experienced the rigors of preparing for and being in trial, always making sure I was giving my 100% effort,” she continued, “and I learned that being a trial lawyer requires a sense of humanity and that trial lawyers are the greatest form of society’s storytellers. I am proud to be part of this special field of courtroom warriors — ones who fight for justice — and to be a part of a Trial Advocacy Program that excels by not only teaching us the procedures of court, but instilling in us the grit that makes FIU Law graduates different.”
After completing her classes and graduating next month, Ms. Fonseca begins her legal career as a Miami-Dade Assistant Public Defender.
