FIU Trial Team Member Tremaine Hemans Mentors at Brownsville Middle Law Academy

FIU College of Law Trial Team member TREMAINE HEMANS recently visited with a group of seventh-grade students at Miami’s Brownsville Middle School to discuss “Beating the Odds,” Ms. Hemans’ inspirational story on overcoming obstacles and forging paths to personal and professional greatness.

Part of its newly-launched Law Academy, Brownsville Middle’s legal studies curriculum is gaining widespread acclaim, including its newly-designed Law Academy Courtroom — equipped with a 24-seat jury box with monitors, judge’s bench, witness stand, counsel tables, and several jury deliberation rooms.

“Speaking at Brownsville was one of the most fulfilling engagements I’ve ever had,” Ms. Hemans reflected.  “These 12-year-olds were mature beyond their years and I saw a bit of myself in each and every face.”

Ms. Hemans’ time spent with these student-mentees is part of the FIU Law Trial Advocacy Program’s Community Outreach, whose mission is to create deep pipelines of genuine opportunity for the next generation of great trial lawyers.

“We challenge our Trial Advocacy students,” Professor H.T. Smith, Director of the Trial Advocacy Program, said, “to go into the community to share their personal stories of overcoming adversity to succeed in law and in life.”
