From trial lawyer Jordan Redavid, founding partner of Fischer Redavid PLLC in Miami, in his email to the South Florida defense bar:
“I wanted to send a message formally introducing and congratulating our new associate, ELROY JOHN, who was sworn in less than two weeks ago.
Earlier today, after a three-day trial in Broward County, a jury acquitted our client of all charges, including arson, for which he was facing a 10-year minimum mandatory prison term. This was Elroy’s first trial, and he delivered a remarkable opening statement, two cross examinations of alleged victims, and a direct examination of our client’s wife.
Our theory of defense was actual innocence, specifically, that the alleged victim/business owners staged the arson and framed our client. At trial, the prosecution offered video surveillance, still photographs, and four witnesses who confidently — albeit mistakenly — identified our client as the perpetrator.
Elroy is supremely talented — a product of FIU’s Trial Team — and has a very bright future.”
Elroy is FIU Law Class of 2017. While in law school, he led two Trial Teams to mock trial championships, was a Best Advocate Winner and Finalist, and received both the inaugural Alex Alvarez Scholarship in Trial Advocacy and the 2017 American Board of Trial Advocates (ABOTA) Trial Advocacy Scholarship. Presently, Elroy is helping prepare the Trial Team to defend its championship in the Honorable E. Earle Zehmer Memorial Mock Trial Competition in Orlando this November.
FYI, Jordan met Elroy when Jordan volunteered to serve as a juror for our Student Final Trials — our bi-annual “final exams” in our advocacy courses. Elroy was the Trial Lawyer-in-Residence “in trial” in Jordan’s courtroom.
