From the preface: We wanted to explore how churches and individuals were motivated by their religious beliefs, particularly in the form of constructive agency to mitigate violence. Struck by the contrast between the visibility of church responses during Latin America’s authoritarian era and the lower profile today, we adopted a diachronic perspective of “past” and “present,” hypothesizing differences in religious responses to political and criminal violence. We also wanted to examine a range of societies throughout Latin America, to identify commonalities as well as contrasts. Finally, we believed that a multidisciplinary approach would be appropriate for such an exploratory project.
