The FIU College of Law generated over $6,000 for scholarships at its annual Public Interest Auction on Tuesday, March 22, 2016. Since 2008, this student-run event has raised over $50,000 to provide scholarships to students who dedicate their summer to full-time unpaid public interest internships. Scholarships are also awarded to students who pursue full-time unpaid public interest internships after graduation.
Kelly Scott, 2L, was instrumental in organizing the excellent event. Scott spent countless hours planning the event and was thrilled that it was a massive success. Scott shared:
“I am so thrilled that the Public Interest Auction this year was a big hit with the students, professors, and administrators who attended. We had been working on acquiring live and silent auction items, finding the perfect food, crunching the numbers for our budget, and generally just planning for the event for weeks, but every second was worth it. It is really amazing to see our students come out and bid so much.”
Scott explained that the scholarship money raised will all be put towards worthy causes. She stated:
“All of the money goes toward the Public Interest scholarship fund and it can truly help those students who wish to do public interest work.”
FIU Law professors contributed to the event’s success by auctioning off items and experiences that they chose to host. The faculty’s excitement about the event and contributions highlight the unique positive culture of FIU Law. Scott extended her gratitude to those professors:
“Most importantly, I appreciate that the professors are not only willing to offer those special experiences auctioned off at the live auction, but they actively want to be included in the list- they want to get to know the students through these personal, unique encounters. That genuine kind of care for the students, and the enthusiasm the students have to attend those events, is one of the aspects about FIU I love the most. That gets at the heart of the school- and that is really something special to see.”
