On Saturday, June 20, 2015, during the T.J. Reddick Bar Association’s 24th Annual Scholarship & Awards Gala – “The Pursuit of a More Perfect Union…The Dream Continues”- rising third-year law student Sandy Steed received the Henry Latimer Scholarship – a $1,000 award. This is Steed’s second scholarship win, she was also recognized by the Wilkie D. Ferguson Bar Association earlier this year.
“Receiving this scholarship has taught me the value of giving back to others,” Steed shared. “Winston Churchill said it best, ‘We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.’ With the assistance of generous scholarship donors and the invaluable legal education and exposure I am receiving from FIU Law, I hope to leave a lasting legacy based on scholarship, leadership, and giving back to my community.”
Steed was born and raised in Miami, but her roots are Haitian. She is the first person in her family to attend professional school. At FIU Law, she is a member of the FIU Law Review and is president of the H.T. Smith Black Law Students Association. She was awarded the Latin American and Caribbean Center’s Foreign Language Area Studies Fellowship to train and develop an advanced comprehension of the Haitian Creole language to use in her legal field of choice. Before coming to law school, she worked at the Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office as a legal secretary. Her experience there confirmed her desire to become a lawyer.
The TJ Reddick Bar Association strives to promote the professional excellence of Black lawyers in Broward County, increase the enrollment of minority students in college and law school and promote the general welfare of all citizens in Broward County. The scholarship was created to provide financial assistance to those who demonstrate solid academic performance and who have overcome obstacles before or during their law school journey.
