Our programming and resources at FIU Law support every dimension of well-being, helping you build resilience as you balance academics, career planning, leadership opportunities, and personal responsibilities.

    Build resilience, manage stress, and develop healthy ways to navigate the demands of law school. Learn to identify and manage your emotions in a way that supports your mental health and your goals. Seek help for mental health when needed.

  • Intellectual

    Challenge yourself to learn, think critically, and grow through new ideas and experiences. Pursue creative and intellectually challenging ideas that foster your continued growth. Take cognitive breaks when needed.

  • Occupational

    Explore career paths, develop professional skills, and find purpose and satisfaction in your academic and professional work. Work towards financial stability by budgeting, managing debt, and planning for the future. Seek help for occupational well-being when needed.

  • Physical

    FIU Law is a member of the ABA Well-Being Pledge Campaign, which seeks to improve the substance use and mental health landscape of the legal profession.

  • 2026 Excellence in Mental Health and Well-Being Award

    Launched by Insight into Academia, the Excellence in Mental Health and Well-Being Award recognizes colleges and universities that demonstrate a strong commitment to fostering mental wellness and well-being for their students, faculty and staff.

  • 2021 Gambrell Professionalism Award

    The E. Smythe Gambrell Professionalism Award, administered by the ABA Standing Committee on Professionalism, recognizes exemplary and innovative programs that help maintain the highest principles of integrity and dedication to the legal profession and the public.

Well-Being Courses at FIU Law

FIU Law offers innovative courses that help students develop the skills, resilience and self-awareness needed to thrive in law school and the legal profession.

  • LAW6930: Mindfulness & Law (1 credit)

    Mindfulness can enhance a lawyer's ability to develop essential competencies for law practice and advocacy: attention and concentration; listening and speaking skills; stress management; emotional regulation; bias awareness and compassion; and ethical and value-aligned decision-making. Students will acquire a foundational understanding of mindfulness practices, explore how the practices relate to the study and practice of law, and develop tools to integrate the practices into their professional and personal lives.

  • LAW7930: Special Topics in Law

    Our Emotional Intelligence and Effective Communication course explores emotional intelligence as a cornerstone of effective relationships and professional success. Students develop skills in communication theory, social style analysis, situational assessment, and the practical application of emotional intelligence in legal settings.
