Graduate Certificate in Intellectual Property

Our graduate certificate program is an opportunity to gain firsthand knowledge of the processes involved in the creative economy. With this in hand, students can make an impact on this increasingly important field that is central to society, global cultures and the economy.

The program provides graduate-level instruction to students interested in learning about laws surrounding:

  • U.S. and foreign copyrights
  • Trademarks
  • Patents
  • Trade secrets
  • Rights of publicity (name, image and likeness)
  • Emerging fields like software and artificial intelligence law

Certificate Requirements

This certificate is only open to degree-seeking students. Applicants who are enrolled in the JD program must be in good academic standing.

  • Duration

    At least 14 credits, including the Intellectual Property survey course and two courses from the Entrepreneurship Courses list.

  • GPA

    Students must earn a GPA of 2.7 over their law school career and a GPA of 3.0 in the courses listed on the Intellectual Property course list.

  • Research Seminar

    Students must complete a seminar which requires a 25-page paper based on original research on a topic related to Intellectual Property or an independent study that includes a research paper on a topic related to Intellectual Property. The seminar may be used to fulfill the upper-level College of Law’s writing requirement.
