Professor Margaret Brenan Correoso recently helped lead the Legal Writing Institute’s 2026 Survey of U.S.-Based Moot Court Programs, contributing to a national discussion closely connected to FIU Law’s emphasis on legal analysis and advocacy.
As co-chair of LWI’s Moot Court Committee, Correoso worked with her fellow co-chair Jessica Mahon Scoles, associate professor at Western New England University to design and distribute the survey, analyze responses from 133 law schools, and produce a 26-page report and one-page summary. The report provides a detailed look at moot court programs across the country and has been widely distributed through the national Moot Court Advisors’ listserv and LWI’s listserv.
“Professor Correoso’s work on this moot court survey will help guide curricular and co-curricular decisions in law schools around the country,” said Professor Marci A. Rosenthal, director of the Legal Skills and Values Program. “Our students are fortunate to benefit from her expertise in this area.”
At FIU Law, students build their legal analysis, research, writing, oral communication, and professionalism skills through the three-course Legal Skills and Values program. Using simulated legal problems, students draft and revise written pleadings and transactional documents, present research findings, prepare appellate briefs, deliver oral arguments, and participate in mock negotiations. They may continue developing these skills through electives and co-curricular opportunities, including the FIU Law Review and the Board of Advocates, FIU’s Moot Court program.
Professors Correoso and Mahon Scoles plan to present the survey’s findings at a conference during the upcoming academic year. LWI has also reappointed Professor Correoso as co-chair of the Moot Court Committee for another two-year term, allowing her to continue contributing to national conversations about moot court, legal writing and advocacy education.
