On Tuesday, September 15, 2026, FIU Law hosted a Constitution Day discussion on academic freedom featuring David M. Rabban, professor at the University of Texas at Austin School of Law and author of “Academic Freedom: From Professional Norm to First Amendment Right.” Interim Dean Daniel Z. Epstein provided opening remarks, and Associate Dean and Professor Howard Wasserman moderated the conversation.
Professor Rabban took students through the history and evolution of academic freedom, how courts have approached its protections and limits, and the questions that remain unsettled today. Students continued the discussion with questions about faculty speech, the application of the First Amendment at private universities, and the scope of legal protections for professors.
