Juris Master (JM)

The JM degree program is specifically designed to close knowledge gaps for non-attorney professionals working in banking, education and health law.

Graduates of the JM program will develop a variety of competencies, including:

  • Documentation Expertise
    Read and understand legal documents, including contracts, judicial opinions, statutes and regulations.

  • Legal Analysis and Drafting
    Analyze primary and secondary legal sources and draft objective and persuasive documents for internal use.

  • Problem and Risk Evaluation
    Identify legal issues and recognize the legal risks that may affect organizational decision-making and evaluate the range of appropriate responses thereto.

  • Improved Communication Skills
    Communicate more effectively with boards of directors, legal departments and other organizational decision-makers.

I highly recommend FIU Law's JM program. The online live format lets you interact with professors and fellow students in real time through video conferencing. The professors are a mix of law school faculty and adjunct instructors with significant experience in regulatory agencies or enforcement. For anyone in a non-attorney or legal-adjacent role, whether early in your career or late in your career like me, the program provides a deeper understanding of U.S. law. Through an excellent selection of textbooks, legal cases, case studies and lectures, I learned the critical reasoning behind organizational policies and the ethical conduct of business.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is a JM degree?

    The JM degree is a master’s degree in law for non-lawyer professionals who would benefit from legal training, but do not want or need a traditional, three-year law degree.

  • Can I practice law with a JM degree?

    No. If you are seeking to practice law, then you should consider our J.D. degree program.

  • Are JM and JD classes the same?

    No. Although some of the subjects covered in the JM program overlap with those offered in the JD program, the JM curriculum is specifically designed for students who are studying law, but who are not intending to sit for the bar exam or practice law.

  • Can I transfer JM credits to the JD program?

    No. The American Bar Association prohibits the transfer of credits from a JM or MLS program into a JD program.

  • When are applications reviewed?

    The admissions committee reviews applications on a rolling basis until the deadline. Applications submitted after the deadline are reviewed as space becomes available. Candidates who apply before March 15 receive priority consideration for scholarships, and have their application fee waived.

  • When does the program start?

    The JM Program enrolls new cohorts in the Fall, Spring or Summer semester of each year.

  • How often will I be attending class?

    JM students typically attend class three days per week; evenings Monday to Thursday and mornings on Saturdays.
