Professor M.C. Mirow Publishes Chapter on the Patriot Constitution of 1812 in New Book Exploring Florida’s Constitutional Past

FIU Law congratulates Professor Mirow on the publication of his chapter, “Florida’s ‘Patriot’ Constitution of 1812,” featured in Crafting Constitutions in Florida, 1810–1968 (University Press of Florida, 2025) edited by Professor Robert Cassanello.

This comprehensive volume explores the history of constitutional drafting and government formation in Florida, highlighting the diverse people and movements that have shaped its legal landscape. Contributors analyze Florida’s six state constitutional revisions, as well as foundational documents such as the West Florida Republic Constitution of 1810, the constitutions of the Seminole and Miccosukee Peoples, and the East Florida Patriot Constitution of 1812. Professor Mirow’s chapter, adapted from an article published in 2017, is dedicated to Florida’s Patriot Constitution, offering a deep exploration of its role in early American expansion, and how it served as a tool during a U.S.-backed attempt to annex Spanish East Florida, providing insight into early American constitutionalism and international law.  Professor Mirow is a member of the Florda bar and writes on the legal history of our state.
