Biography
Manuel A. Gómez is Associate Dean for Graduate Studies and Global Engagement, Professor of Law, and Director of the Master of Science in the Law of Technology at Florida International University College of Law. In his administrative role, he oversees the LL.M. program, the Study Abroad program, and other international initiatives. With more than three decades of experience in teaching, public speaking, research, and legal practice, his work focuses on three core areas: international arbitration and transnational litigation; the intersection of dispute resolution and new technologies; and the fight against corruption. These interests extend to broader questions of legal and institutional reform, private ordering, the globalization of the legal professions, and legal education.
Professor Gómez's academic work examines how culture, social norms, and economic and political forces shape the genesis and operation of law. While he maintains a particular focus on Latin America, much of his work addresses questions that transcend geographical boundaries. He has taught, conducted research, spoken, and consulted throughout the Americas, Europe, Asia, and Africa, including as a visiting professor or guest lecturer at universities across multiple countries.
In his professional practice, Professor Gómez serves as an international arbitrator and as a foreign law expert in transnational disputes. He also brings several years of successful leadership and administrative experience in legal education and in professional and academic societies. He is Editor-in-Chief of the World Arbitration and Mediation Review and Chair-Elect of the Miami International Arbitration Society. A U.S. Fulbright Scholar, Professor Gómez holds a J.S.D. and J.S.M. from Stanford University School of Law and a law degree (abogado, cum laude) from Andrés Bello Catholic University School of Law in Venezuela. He is fluent in English and Spanish, with working knowledge of Italian and Portuguese.
