Professor H.T. Smith, Founding Director of the FIU College of Law Trial Advocacy Program, recently participated as a Guest Commissioner in the Florida State Hearing for the National Commission for Voter Justice (NCVJ). The Commission was established in 2018 to research, document, and publicize policies and practices of voter suppression, voter intimidation, and voter disenfranchisement across the nation. NCVJ met at FIU Law in the Ceremonial Courtroom, and was graciously hosted by the H.T. Smith Black Law Student Association. Chaired by civil rights icon Rev. Jesse Jackson, the Florida State Hearing was presided over by renown civil rights attorney Barbara Arnwine, President of the Transformative Justice Coalition. Testimony was provided by attorney Nancy Abudu, Legal Director of the ACLU of Florida; Professor Donald Jones, University of Miami School of Law; attorney David Honig, Special Counsel for Civil Rights for the Florida State Conference of NAACP Branches and Youth Units;  Rachel Adekanye, Transformative Justice Coalition Elon Resident-in-Practice, reading testimony for the Fair Elections Center; and, Valencia Gunder, Florida Rights Restoration Coalition.
