Fourth-year law student Jeremy Thompson, along with second-year law students Reginald Guillaume and Chanelle Artiles, have been appointed to the executive board of the National Black Law Student Association (NBLSA) where they will serve through April 2016.

Thompson was appointed as the National Director of Education and Career Development. Part of his responsibilities will be to manage the Sandy Brown Memorial Scholarship, coordinate the activities of regional job fairs, oversee NBLSA’s Symplicity website, promote scholarship and job opportunities and publish a monthly newsletter.

“Along with my duties, the Education and Career Development team will be endorsing two new programs: NBLSA’s Become Practice Ready and Finding Your Dream Job initiatives, which will prepare our members to have successful legal careers.” Thompson shared. “We will also distribute surveys to legal employers in each of NBLSA’s regions requesting those employers to rate the importance of grades, law journal experience, job experience and other factors when hiring first year associates.”

Guillaume will serve as Education Specialist where he will research opportunities that will help supplement and enrich the legal education students are receiving in their respective law schools.

“I will work hand-in-hand with the Jeremy to help achieve the team’s goals,” Guillaume said. “As a member of FIU Law’s H.T. Smith Black Law Student Association (BLSA) I get to help my fellow classmates and now I will have the chance to be involved at the national level.”

Like Guillaume, Artiles will support Thompson in reaching his goals through her role as Career Specialist. “My role is to be part of the initiative to help students find employment during their legal education and after they graduate,” she shared.

For all of them, getting involved at the national level was inspired by their fellow classmate and fellow BLSA member – Scheril Murray Powell. Powell serves as the Coordinator of Convention Competition.

“We all share the same passion for uplifting African American communities,” Guillaume stated. “I know we will make a difference!”
