Hispanic Law Students Association (HLSA)
The Hispanic Law Students Association’s (HLSA) mission is to articulate and promote the professional needs and goals of law students of Hispanic descent, while utilizing legal skills and training to bring about meaningful changes in the legal community.
In order to meet the needs of our members, HLSA provides opportunities for individuals to network with attorneys and judges in both formal and informal settings. HLSA prides itself in keeping its membership informed about professional events taking place and helping our members achieve a well-respected reputation for themselves and FIU College of Law. Professional development is the key to success and HLSA offers its membership the opportunity to attend workshops and conferences on a national level to achieve their professional goals. Additionally, HLSA helps our members give back to the community through various philanthropic events and charitable fundraisers.
FIU HLSA is very fortunate to have the support of the Hispanic National Bar Association. Law students are eligible to join the HNBA at no cost and enjoy the added benefits of being an HNBA member.
HLSA hosts various programs & events throughout the school year. In the fall, HLSA hosts the HLSA/HNBA Mentorship Program. This program begins with the “HLSA/HNBA Mentorship Reception,” where mentors and mentees are paired up through “speed mentoring”. The matched mentors and mentees later have an opportunity to formally mingle at the “HLSA Mojito Mixer”. In the spring, HLSA hosts the “Hispanic Night of Flavor”, an event where law students and attorneys come together to honor the recipients of the Enma Tarafa Legal Excellence Award and the Enma Tarafa Scholarship Award. This upcoming year HLSA will be joining forces with the HNBA and participating in the following events: the Annual HNBA Tennis & Golf Tournament, Street Law en Español, the Annual Minority Mentoring Picnic, the FIU Immigration Task Force, and the HNBA Holiday Party.
