From the back cover: Written during the reign of Ramon Berenguar IV, Count of Barcelona during the first half of the twelfth century, The Usatges of Barcelona is a reflection of the oral traditions of customary law as refashioned by literate clerics in service to the court. While customary feudal norms remained at the core if the code, the court’s curials also borrowed heavily from Visigothic and Roman law codes and from contemporary French and Italian compilations of canon and feudal law.
