FIU Trial Team President and 3L, Annasofia A. Roig, has received the Tomas F. Gamba Scholarship in Trial Advocacy. Named for FIU Trial Advocacy Program supporter and benefactor Tomas F. Gamba — Coral Gables trial lawyer with Gamba Herrera and a local and state bar leader — the scholarship was awarded this past Friday as part of the Program’s INTO THE COURTROOM court observation event. This was the Gamba scholarship’s inaugural presentation, which goes to a Trial Lawyer-in-Residence who has both excelled in the study of the legal mechanics and human dynamics of trying cases to juries, and has also given of their time, spirit, and talent back to the Trial Advocacy Program by, among other things, competing on our champion Trial Team, being a Team and Program leader, volunteering at Team and Program events, and extending the impact of our Program into the community to lift those in need, and to educate the generations of trial lawyers and fearless advocates to come. “With the caliber of the students in FIU’s Trial Advocacy Program, the future of passionate and ethical advocacy is in good hands,” Gamba said.  “My hope is that this scholarship will inspire others to invest as well in the next generation of trial lawyers being trained at FIU.”

Ms. Roig, in addition to serving as Trial Team President, is a recent Trial Team champion herself. She also serves as Executive Managing Editor of the FIU Law Review and as a Student Ambassador. When asked to describe her law school journey on the way to this scholarship, Ms. Roig replied, “Involvement in the legal system is rarely something that people elect, and often is very unpleasant, but there is nothing like the look on a client’s face when you give them the news that you were able to successfully resolve their case.  To help those people,” she believes, “is fulfilling to me in a way that no other career would be — to help the helpless and to solve problems that others cannot do on their own, not without the assistance of able counsel.” Founding Director of the Trial Advocacy Program, Professor H.T. Smith, had this to say:  “The Tomas F. Gamba Scholarship in Trial Advocacy is an important new investment in our Trial Lawyers-in-Residence, and Annasofia Roig is clearly the most deserving recipient of the first scholarship.” Contact the Trial Advocacy Program at https://law.fiu.edu/trial-advocacy or by calling 305-348-8095.
