Two more FIU Law alumni have paid it forward with a $5,000 donation to FIU Law’s Evening Scholarship Fund. Kenia Garcia ’12 and Karamat Qayum ’11, of the law firm Garcia & Qayum Law Firm, have become the latest alumni to recognize the importance and value of the Evening Scholarship Fund.

Partners since 2013, Garcia and Qayum focus their practice on immigration, criminal and business law.

As an evening student, Garcia’s reason to give to the fund was  very personal.

“As an evening student I could not take advantage of any scholarships,” she shared. “It takes an evening student twice the effort and determination due to all the other ‘non-traditional’ stressors they have in their lives and their efforts should be rewarded.”

For Qayum, “it is important to reward those individuals that exemplify hard work in its truest form.”

Both Garcia and Qayum value the experiences they had while at FIU Law. Garcia offered this advice to current students, “you will meet your future colleagues in law school, start treating them as such.”  Qayum added, “It is important to develop great relationships.”

As their names are added to the growing list of supporters they challenge alumni, who are considering making a donation, but haven’t yet that giving back will help FIU Law continue to get better and better.

“FIU Law has already exceeded a lot of expectations. Alumni donations are what continue to sustain our network and our strength as a school,” Garcia shared.
