On Monday, November 24, 2004, Florida Chief Justice Jorge Labarga signed an administrative order which created the Florida Commission on Access to Civil Justice. FIU Law Dean R. Alexander Acosta, and 26 other leaders in the private sector, legal community and both branches of the state government, has been appointed to serve on the inaugural Commission.

The Commission will study the unmet civil legal needs of the disadvantaged, low income, and moderate-income Floridians. Its work will include looking at ways to improve current legal problems, to develop solutions based on new technologies and to explore ways to meet the needs of Floridians who are caught in the current civil legal services gap.

“I look forward to working with the rest of the Commission members, The Florida Bar and The Florida Bar Foundation on helping address the concerns that face the most vulnerable in our communities,” Dean Acosta shared. “The diversity of perspectives and expertise of the Commission will certainly enable us to meet Chief Justice Labarga’s mission and objectives.”

The 27-member Commission will serve through June 2016.
