Anne-Marie Slaughter, president and CEO of New America, visited the FIU College of Law where she was joined by students and faculty to discuss the future of legal education. The engaging discussion was kicked-off with an introduction by acting Dean Tawia Ansah. Slaughter began by discussing what the current job market in Miami looks like for all job types followed by her view on the future of legal education and the current job market for the legal profession. Slaughter went into detail on how the field of law is completely different than when she was attending Harvard for her law degree. She described how twenty years ago, if you graduated law school and became partner at a large firm, you were set for life, but in today’s legal profession that is no longer the case. More lawyers and law firms must specialize or partner with a specialist in ways that have never been done before to be successful as a lawyer today. “Increasingly, I think we will see smaller groups of lawyers or lawyers and others. I think you are more likely to see lawyers joined by forensic scientists or healthcare professionals of some kind. You will see people who will come together to solve problems for others, but in much more fluid and much smaller configurations”   The conversation was followed by a question and answer session on how educators can prepare students for the ever-changing landscape of the legal profession. Professor Norberg will be spearheading the Spring 2018 FIU Law Review Symposium that will also touch on the challenges facing legal education on April 12-13, 2018.
