Alumna Latoya Brown ’13 recently began her three-year term as Director for Group 1 with the Dade County Bar Association. As the largest voluntary bar association in Florida, and the voice for Miami-Dade County’s diverse legal community, Brown hopes to “ensure that Miami-Dade County’s diverse legal community is well-represented, particularly by providing more diverse programming.” She will also access the bar’s resources to help promote and encourage minorities to engage in the study and practice of law.

When recalling her years at FIU Law – where she graduated in the top five of her class – the “accessibility of the faculty” is forefront in her mind. “My professors were always willing to take the time to meet with me and provide guidance where needed. Guidance not only with respect to a particular course, but also regarding my long-term career goals.  In my opinion, that level of accessibility is an invaluable resource for any law student.”

Brown is currently an associate litigation attorney at Colson Hicks Eidson,  Her area of practice includes commercial litigation, class action lawsuits, white collar criminal defense and general civil litigation. She recognizes that is was her participation as a member of FIU Law’s Moot Court that proved to be of value to her in her career as a litigator.

“FIU Law catered not only to my growth and knowledge in theoretical aspects of law, but also to practical aspects,” she said. “While at FIU law, I had the ability to tailor my study to permit me to participate in an internship at the Miami office of the SEC, a commercial litigation firm and as a judicial clerk. With this background, when I left FIU Law and joined Colson Hicks Eidson, I was able to immediately start contributing to the work of the firm, meaningfully.”
