Oscar Fernandez is beginning a new chapter as an Assistant Professor for the NSU Shepard Broad College of Law, teaching Legal Research and Writing.  After completing his Juris Doctor at FIU Law in 2014, Oscar has gained valuable experience with AmeriCorps and Equal Justice Works, where he served as an immigration attorney for Catholic Charities, and as a Practice Area Consultant with LexisNexis, where he collaborated with law schools across South Florida. These experiences, along with his time as a visiting professor in the 2023-2024 academic year, helped shape his approach to legal education.

During his time at FIU Law, Oscar was influenced by professors who served as guiding figures throughout his academic journey and embodied the kind of educator he strives to be. One course that left a lasting impact was Professor Juan C. Gomez’s immigration clinic. “Professor Gomez’s immigration clinic was the single best course I took at FIU Law,” Oscar shared. “It changed me as a person and provided invaluable practice experience that served me well in my first few years on the job!.”

Looking ahead, Oscar plans to expand his teaching portfolio to include Comparative Law and Immigration, though he is also working to incorporate emerging fields like generative AI into the Legal Research & Writing curriculum. Aside from teaching, he is also currently working on research projects focused (separately) on immigration law and generative AI in the legal field, expecting to publish his first article by the end of the summer. For current law students considering a career in academia, Oscar encourages them to gain practical experience first, emphasizing that real-world knowledge enriches the classroom and equips them to better guide future students. A bonus piece of advice he shared was “Hold on to every syllabus, assessment, and handout your current professors provide! They have put years of hard work and dedication into perfecting their curriculum, and if you ever decide to go into academia, you’ll be glad you saved those documents.”
