Twenty-two FIU Law students, accompanied by Dean Antony Page, traveled to Washington, D.C., to participate in a Fly-In during Ideas Week 2025. This three-day experiential seminar explores how policies are made and the career opportunities available in the nation’s capital for students passionate about various issues.

Monday, February 24

The first official stop of the seminar took students to Gallup Headquarters, where they met FIU Law alumnus William Kruse ’08, Gallup’s General Counsel and Chief Compliance Officer.

The session provided an in-depth look into Gallup’s renowned workplace consulting and global research, with insights from an alum who shared his firsthand experience in the field. Students then visited The Heritage Foundation, led by John Malcolm, Vice President of the Institute for Constitutional Government, who guided them through this American conservative think tank that formulates and promotes public policies.

The day ended at FIU in Washington, D.C. (FIU in D.C.), with a welcome dinner, where they met FIU alumna Charlyn Stanberry ’13, Vice President of Governmental Relations at the National Association of Broadcasters.

Tuesday, February 25

The day kicked off with a visit to the Florida House on Capitol Hill, followed by a quick stop at the Supreme Court for a group picture. Later, they attended a hearing titled Justice Delayed: The Crisis of Undermanned Federal Courts, hosted by the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Courts, Intellectual Property, and the Internet. They also met with one of its members, Congressman Eric Swalwell (D-CA). The day concluded at FIU in D.C. with a talk by Conor Fogarty, Educational Programs Manager for the Cato Law Program.

Wednesday, February 26

The final day was filled with activity as students moved from one engaging experience to the next. The morning began with meetings at FIU in D.C., where they connected with influential figures such as Heather K. O’Brien, Managing Director of the Supreme Court Fellows Program, and Keith Fernandez, Head of Social Impact Communications for DoorDash.

They then visited K&L Gates’ Labor, Employment, and Workplace Safety Practice and met with partner Craig Leen, who shared his experience across federal, state, and local government, as well as the private sector. The program concluded with a closing dinner, where students joined participants from other Fly-In programs.
