FIU Law student Maria Bello recently traveled to Guantanamo Bay as an official observer for the National Institute of Military Justice (NIMJ), attending military commission hearings related to the 2002 Bali bombings.
As a First Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Reserve, Bello was selected to represent NIMJ, the only non-governmental organization in the U.S. solely dedicated to studying and improving the military justice system. The government allows up to seven observers per scheduled hearing to ensure public access, and Bello played a critical role in providing transparency by serving as the public’s eyes and ears during the proceedings.
Her participation reflects FIU Law’s commitment to real-world legal engagement and opportunities for students to contribute to significant legal processes.
Congratulations to Maria on this unique and impactful experience!
