Lozada named Law Faculty/Administrator Award winner
Rosario Lozada
The Standing Committee on Professionalism named Florida International University College of Law’s Rosario Lozada as its Law Faculty/Administrator Award winner.
Lozada is the professor of legal skills and values and director of Well-Being in Law at FIU Law.
The award recognizes a faculty member or administrator of one of Florida’s accredited law schools who, through teaching, scholarship, and service to the profession, best supports or exemplifies the mission of the Standing Committee on Professionalism: “To promote the fundamental ideals and values of professionalism within the legal system and to instill those ideals of character, competence, civility, and commitment in all those persons serving and seeking to serve therein.”
Lozada joined FIU Law in 2012 and became the director of Well-Being in Law in 2021, a program she co-developed alongside Associate Dean of Students Angelique Ortega. Professor Lozada promotes a model of legal education that examines the conditions that allow students to succeed academically, personally, and professionally. This model formed the foundation for the Well-Being at FIU program. Well-Being at FIU was the recipient of the 2021 E. Smythe Gambrell Professionalism Award administered by the ABA Standing Committee on Professionalism, which recognizes exemplary and innovative programs that help maintain the highest principles of integrity and dedication to the legal profession and the public.
“Professor Lozada continues to uphold the highest ideals of professionalism in all aspects of her work,” according to the committee. “She has a strong commitment to advancing law student and attorney well-being in the service of ethical and value-aligned decisionmaking and on building professional and inclusive communities in the law. She is described as someone who prioritizes self-care, well-being, and reflection, and emphasizes how these acts are essential for individuals to live out their values; to act ethically, competently, and professionally; to optimize their learning; to develop empathy, compassion, and respect for themselves and others; and to enjoy the rewards of a rich and meaningful professional life.”
In recognition of her commitment to the ideals of professionalism, Professor Lozada was recently awarded FIU’s distinguished Torch Award, which recognizes an individual who exemplifies FIU’s institutional values of truth, freedom, respect, responsibility, and excellence by exhibiting the highest standards of character and ethical behavior.
She was also recently appointed a faculty fellow with the Office of Faculty Leadership and Success, in FIU’s Office of the Provost. She serves on the University’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Education Committee and often collaborates with an interdisciplinary faculty workgroup to foster contemplative practices in education at the Center for Advancement of Teaching where she has led and co-facilitated faculty reading groups on social change, racial justice, and mindfulness.
“It is undeniable that Professor Lozada demonstrates the ‘four C’s’ of professionalism — character, competence, commitment, and civility,” according to the committee.
The Law Faculty/Administrator Award, and other professionalism awards, will be presented at Annual Judicial Luncheon June 23 at the Signia by Hilton Orlando Bonnet Creek during The Florida Bar Annual Convention.
