In late January, news coverage of U.S. video game retailer GameStop Corp surged above that for tech giants Tesla and Apple. The surge followed heavy chatter in social media forums that sent its price up 20-fold. The move triggered significant short-covering by hedge funds, while trading platform Robin Hood had to restrict trading on popular stocks on social media, given the volatile market conditions.
