On September 5, 2014, Professor Charles C. Jalloh presented a paper entitled, “The Role that International Organizations, Civil Society, and Other Non-State Actors Play in Protecting Human Rights and International Criminal Justice” at the High-Level Meeting of Experts on Global Issues and Their Impact on The Future of Human Rights and International Criminal Justice in Siracusa, Italy. The conference, which was convened by the International Institute of Higher Studies in Criminal Sciences (ISISC), in collaboration with the International Bar Association (IBA) and the International Association of Penal Law (AIDP), was described in the program as drawing together “esteemed jurists, attorneys and scholars” in the field of International Law, as well as high-level United Nations and government officials and prosecutors and judges of several international courts. Professor Jalloh’s panel was chaired by Sir Nigel Rodley, Chair of the United Nations Human Rights Committee. His co-panelists were Professor David Scheffer (Northwestern) and Former United States Ambassador-at-Large for War Crimes under the Clinton Administration; Professor Andrew Clapham, Founding Director of the Geneva Academy for International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights; and Mr. Stephen Mathias, the Assistant Secretary-General for Legal Affairs at the United Nations. This closed invitation only meeting included participants from 38 countries, although only a select few presented papers.
