Professor Gómez Addresses Implications of Chevron-Ecuador Saga

Professor Manuel A. Gómez recently served as a panel expert at the Constitutional Innovation, Human Rights, and Public Interest Litigation in the Global South Symposium, held at Stanford Law School on May 7, 2013.

Professor Gomez’s presentation, A Sour Battle in Lago Agrio: The Judicial Protection of the Environment and Indigenous Rights in Ecuador, addressed the implications of the Chevron-Ecuador saga in the debate on the protection of diffuse rights in Latin America and the development of structural litigation in the region.

Manuel Gómez Discusses Law Abiding Behavior at Burning Man Festival

Manuel Gómez, Associate Professor at the Florida International University College of Law, recently discussed his research on the Burning Man festival for the Stanford Program in Law and Society called Order in the Desert: Law abiding Behavior at Burning Man. The presentation was held April 10 at Stanford Law School.

The Burning Man is a massive weeklong event that takes place in the Nevada Desert, which, when compared to similar events, shows one of the lowest crime rates, and high-level law abiding behavior.

Professor Manuel Gomez Discusses the Future of Venezuelan Politics
Professor Gomez discusses the future of Venezuelan politics during the March 8 panel discussion

Manuel Gomez, associate professor at the Florida International University College of Law, took part in discussing the future of Venezuelan politics during the March 8 panel discussion “Venezuela after Chavez: Initial Reactions and a Forecast of What’s to Come.” Professors from the Department of Politics and International Relations Astrid Arraras, Barry Levit, and Jose Miguel Cruz were also panelists.

The panel discussion, moderated by Eduardo Gamarra, professor of politics and international relations, revolved around President Chavez as a symbol of the revolution, and the constitutionality of swearing in Vice President Nicolás Maduro Moros as interim President of Venezuela

Panelists discussed the symbolism behind Maduro’s swearing in ceremony by the military army. “It is important that he is sworn in that building. It symbolizes success for the military,” said panelist Astrid Arraras, “It is sending a message to the military that he is now their leader.”

Professor Gomez Discusses the Future of Transnational Litigation

Manuel A. Gómez, associate professor at Florida International University College of Law, was recently invited to present at the “Lessons from Chevron: Stanford Journal of Complex Litigation Symposium.” The symposium, sponsored by Stanford Law School, was held on Feb. 8, 2013.

With a series of panels, the symposium brought together leading scholars and practitioners to discuss the ongoing litigation between Chevron and the people of Lago Agrio, Ecuador regarding alleged environmental harms. Having been characterized as both “a shakedown” and “a landmark victory,” this case raises important questions about the future of transnational litigation.

As part of a panel about forum non conveniens and judgment enforcement, Professor Gómez discussed the efforts to enforce an USD$18 billion judgment issued by an Ecuadorean court, in Argentina, Brazil and potentially other Latin American jurisdictions.

Manuel A. Gomez Interviewed by Kenny Malone for the Miami Herald

WLRN/Miami Herald news reporter and producer Kenny Malone will host FIU Law Professor Manuel A. Gomez. Professor Gomez will discuss the lawsuit filed in Miami federal court against Aroldis Chapman, a left-handed pitcher for the Cincinnati Reds. Aroldis Champan, who defected from Cuba, has been sued for $18 million by a Cuban-American man who blames the player for his imprisonment on the communist island. The lawsuit claims that Chapman falsely accused Danilo Curbelo Garcia of involvement in human trafficking, leading to his 2008 arrest and conviction in Cuba.

Professor Gómez teaches international and comparative law as well as complex and transnational litigation-related courses at the College of Law.

Professor Rogelio Perez-Perdomo delivers the final lecture in his series of lectures on the Latin American legal culture

MIAMI (March 28, 2012) – Professor Rogelio Perez-Perdomo delivered the fourth and final lecture in his series of lectures on the Latin American legal culture; the talk was entitled “Legal Scholars and Legal Culture in Latin America: A Comparative Perspective.”  Perez-Perdomo is the Latin American Law Visiting Professor for 2012 hosted by the Miami Consortium for Latin American and Caribbean Studies, a collaborative endeavor between the University of Miami and Florida International University.  He is Professor of Law at the Universidad Metropolitana in Caracas, Venezuela, and continues to serve as a frequent Visiting Professor at Stanford Law School.  His most recent books include Justicia e injusticias en Venezuela (2011) and Law in Many Societies (2011), co-edited with Lawrence Friedman (Stanford) and Manuel A. Gomez (FIU).  Professor Gomez commented on Professor Perez-Perdomo’s presentation.

MIAMI (February 28, 2012) — FIU College of Law congratulates Professor Manuel Gomez on his selection for two prestigious academic posts on international dispute resolution. Based on the nominations of peers, Professor Gomez was selected to join the Institute of Transnational Arbitration’s (ITA) Academic Council, as well as the scientific committee for the VIII Conference of the World Mediation Forum (WMF).
