Symposium Encourages the Idea that Professionalism Matters

On Feb. 27, 2013, the FIU College of Law Center for Professionalism and Ethics, together with The Florida Bar Henry Latimer Center for Professionalism, hosted a symposium at the FIU College of Law titled Professionalism Matters.

At the event, led by George Knox, director of non-litigation advocacy programs within the Center for Professionalism and Ethics, and with contributions from various guest speakers, participants explored the fundamental ideals and values that underlie the meaning of professionalism. The event was ultimately designed to provide the tools and motivation that stimulate personal and professional growth and development.

Professor George Knox Quoted in the Miami Herald on Mindfulness

In a recent Miami Herald article, Florida International University College of Law Professor George Knox is quoted on how contemplative activities that allow people to focus upon the moment and release internal stress, reduce anger and allow for civil behavior.

George Knox is the Director for Professionalism and Ethics at FIU Law, and will lead a conference on mindfulness titled “Professionalism Matters” on Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2013.

Mindfulness making its way into the mainstream

Scott Rogers’ office isn’t that of a typical law professor. A bookshelf is piled high with books on meditation rather than legal tomes. A round table is surrounded by bamboo chairs, where Rogers invites students to sit for 10 minutes to quiet the mind.

Rogers practices mindfulness, which involves paying attention in a particular way, on purpose and in the present, often through breathing techniques. The practice, which has roots in Buddhism and spiritual growth, is increasingly being studied by scientists and the medical profession as a way to reduce stress and enhance one’s health…

FIU Law & M-DCPS Ethics Advisory Committee Host Summit

The FIU Law Center for Professionalism and Ethics and the College of Education recently teamed up with the Miami-Dade County Public Schools Ethics Advisory Committee to lead a one-day summit for students, parents, teachers and employees from Miami-Dade County’s public school system.

The goal of the summit was “to advance a continued dialog that offers a panoply of tools that assist students with developing the necessary skills and high ethical standards for use as they participate in solving problems on a local, statewide, and global scale.”

Providing an overview of cooperative and effective community approaches, the session leaders covered topics ranging from ethics in government to the ethical leadership and decision making in education.
