Jan Stone earned a J.D. from the University of Minnesota, an M.S. in Information Media from Saint Cloud State University, and an M.L.S from the University of North Texas. After law school, she served as a Judicial Law Clerk for the Honorable Harriet Lansing of the Minnesota Court of Appeals. Following that clerkship, Jan worked as an attorney editor at the company now known as Thomson WestGroup, where she gained an insider's knowledge of the products of primary law including experience in creating almost all types of editorial enhancements to both statutes and case law. As a reference librarian, she served as library liaison with the three-semester legal writing and research program at William Mitchell College of Law and taught units on legal research in that program. She also taught a credit-bearing class on Internet Legal Research.
A presenter at both the American Association of Law Libraries (AALL) and Computer Assisted Legal Instruction (CALI) national conferences, Jan has taught legal research for continuing legal education courses and for public and law librarians. By assisting with curriculum design and teaching in a Gates Foundation grant program, she helped the Minnesota Association of Law Libraries (MALL) earn the 2005 AALL Comprehensive Chapter Professional Development Award. Also a professional indexer, Jan provides access for users of diverse law books, including the sixth edition of The Process of Legal Research.
Jan is responsible for the public services provided by the law library involving instructional programs, circulation, reserve, inter-library loan, and collection maintenance. She also assists faculty and students in the College of Law, the greater FIU community, and members of the public with their legal research needs.
