Masako Patrum has over 30 years of law library experience and has held a variety of positions in Public Services and Technical Services in law school libraries and a court library. She came to Florida International University from Wake Forest University Professional Center Library where she held a position as the Technical Services Librarian managing the operation of Technical Services. At FIU, Patrum started as the Access Services Librarian but later transferred to the Head of Cataloging and Bibliographic Control Librarian position when the position became vacant. Her previous positions include the Circulation Librarian at Vanderbilt University Law Library, the Reference/Catalog Librarian at Texas Tech University Law Library, the Acquisitions/Cataloging Librarian at the North Carolina Supreme Court Library, and the Reference Associate at the University of North Carolina Law Library. She received her M.L.S., summa cum laude, from North Carolina Central University and her B.A. from the University of Ryukyus in Japan.
At Florida International University College of Law Library, Patrum currently manages the Cataloging and Bibliographic Control Department. Her responsibilities include overseeing all aspects of the Law Library’s technical services, except for acquisitions and serials, supporting and providing access to the library information resources of all formats. She works with FIU Libraries and Information Technology personnel to coordinate Law Library operations and procedures with the University Libraries. Patrum took a major role in the FIU Law Library’s participation in the Florida State University Library System Shared Bib Implementation Project which was mandated by the state legislature to merge the online catalog databases of all Florida state university libraries and community college libraries into one. She also participates in teaching first-year legal research and provides research assistance to faculty, students and other library users.
Patrum is an active member of the American Association of Law Libraries (AALL) and Southeastern Chapter of American Association of Law Libraries (SEAALL). She has served on various AALL and SEAALL committees including the chair positions. She is co-author of “The Internet Guide for Tennessee Lawyers,” (1998) and “Status and Tenure for Academic Law Libraries: A Survey,” 127 Law Library Journal 96 (2004). In addition, Patrum has been a presenter at the EndUser Conferences for the Voyager Integrated Library System (ILS) users. She was the winner of the Outstanding Librarian of the Year award at Texas Tech UniversityLaw Library in 2003 and the SEAALL Scholarship award in 2004.
