Florida International University is the state's research university in South Florida. Known for its nationally renowned faculty, a diverse student population from more than 156 foreign countries, and its prominent alumni, FIU is one of America’s most vivacious institutions of higher learning. With over 35,000 students, 1000 full-time faculty and 110,000 alumni, it is one of the country's largest universities. It offers nearly 200 baccalaureate, master's and doctoral degree programs in 18 colleges and schools. Only 34 years old, it has achieved many benchmarks of academic distinction that have taken other universities more than a century to reach. FIU is a member of Phi Beta Kappa, the oldest and most prestigious academic honor society in the nation, and one of only five university or college members in the state of Florida. The University's cutting-edge research programs attracted over $75 million in external support in 2004-2005. FIU's excellence has also been acknowledged in its ranking among America's top 100 public national universities (U.S. News & World Report) and is the youngest institution in this group.
