South Florida is one of the country's largest metropolitan areas. The four counties that comprise South Florida – Miami-Dade, Broward, Palm Beach and Monroe – are fast growing and have a combined population of almost five million people. Miami itself has a population of more than 2 million people. An international crossroads, the metropolitan area is rich in diversity. Its ethnic, racial, cultural and linguistic diversity is a precursor of much of urban America in the twenty-first century.

South Florida is known for its natural beauty and is home to Everglades National Park, Biscayne National Park and the Florida Keys. There are miles of beaches in the area, some of which are rated among the most beautiful in the world. Notable attractions include the Miami Seaquarium, the Miami MetroZoo, one of the top 10 zoos in the world, Fairchild Tropical Gardens, and Parrot Jungle.

Miami night life is renowned. The trendy restaurants and clubs of South Beach attract visitors from around the world and are frequented by celebrities, many of whom call Miami home.

The Miami area has a subtropical climate with plenty of sunshine throughout the year. The rainy season occurs during the summer and early fall, keeping the area lush and tropical.
