Welcome to the exciting world of the Florida International University College of Law. The Florida International University College of Law was established by the Florida Legislature to meet the need for quality, affordable legal education in South Florida.
The College of Law was provisionally accredited by the American Bar Association in 2004 and fully accredited in 2006, the quickest possible time in which a law school may achieve full accreditation under ABA rules.
We welcome you to this presentation of our vision and plans, the faculty and administration who will carry them out, the details of our academic program, and the procedures by which you may seek admission. While we believe that we are a unique law school, we are committed to a full and faithful presentation of the most successful techniques of traditional legal education. This includes clinical programs that provide our students with opportunities to learn the skills of law practice by providing legal services to needy clients in
structured, supervised settings. At the same time, consistent with our missions of community service and preparing our students for the globalization of law practice in the 21st century, we offer a distinctive academic program that sets us apart from most other law schools.
The FIU College of Law is committed to providing a demanding program of legal education to a well qualified student body. Although we provide our students with professional skills, ours is not a vocational school. We believe that the best lawyers are those who can serve their clients and respond to the needs of the society in which we live. Such lawyers require training which is both intellectually rigorous and broadly conceived. Thus, a well educated lawyer considers not only rules of law and ways to analyze or propound legal arguments, but also the value systems which support the development of law, and the relationships between law and other disciplines whose understanding is important to the promulgation of justice.
We have appointed an outstanding faculty of teacher-scholars for whom teaching and mentoring of students is a top priority. They are proven classroom teachers. At the same time, they are accomplished scholars who have published in the country's leading law reviews and university presses. All are dedicated to serving the local, state, national and international communities through law. If you have any questions after perusing our website or catalog, we hope you will communicate them to our Admissions Office.
