Congratulations to Maria Pradilla (2L evening) and Joseph Glace (2L day) – the two competed in the National Finals of the ABA National Negotiation Competition and finished as Semi-Finalists – 7th overall in the nation from a field of over 220 teams from 116 law schools!
The National Finals were held this past weekend in New Orleans in conjunction with the ABA’s Mid-Year Meeting in New Orleans. In November 2011, the ABA held ten Regional Competitions throughout the country, with the top 24 teams from the United States and Canada winning a trip to the National Finals. FIU’s Board of Advocates Negotiation teams placed 2nd and 4th in the Southeast Region, with the 2nd Place team (Maria and Joseph) earning a trip to the National Finals. This is the 6th time in 8 years that a team from FIU has advanced to the National Finals, and this is the 5th time FIU has advanced to the Semi-Finals. Notably, all three Southeast Regional teams advanced to the Semi-Final Round.
The team was assisted in New Orleans by their two student coaches, Lori Eshelman (3L) and Michelle Lavertu Grosser (Dec 2011 alum), and their faculty coach. As in past competitions, the ABA released the facts for the Semi-Final round on Friday evening at 8 p.m., and the team members and coaches then spent the next 6 hours (until 2 a.m.) reviewing the facts, strategizing, and preparing for the Semi-Final Round negotiation to be held the next morning at 9 a.m. Many thanks to Lori and to Michelle.
Prior to heading to New Orleans, the team practiced for three weeks at FIU, including many evenings and weekends. During that three-week period, the team was ably assisted by the Vice President of the BOA Negotiation team, Daylen Docampo Perez (3L), as well as Amanda Braun (2L), Daniel Ford (2L), Noah Snyder (2L), Kenia Codecido (2L), and Jamilla Little (3L). The team was also assisted by Annie Hernandez (a Miami attorney), Craig Leen (Chief Legal Officer for the City of Coral Gables), and Fleta Statmen and Rafael Paz (FIU Legal Counsel).
