Many students must rely upon some form of financial aid to pursue a legal education. In conjunction with the University Financial Aid Office, the College of Law is committed to helping students obtain the funds needed to meet the costs associated with pursuing a legal education.
A thorough understanding of financial obligations, sound financial planning and budgeting throughout law school are all critical to your future success as an attorney. How much you owe at the time of graduation and thereafter will have a significant impact upon your career and quality of life.
Students are encouraged to take a proactive approach toward financing law school and arrange an appointment with an Admissions and Financial Aid advisor. Please contact the Director of Admissions and Financial Aid at (305) 348-8006 for further information.
HOW TO APPLY
The primary financial aid resources available to students are loans and need and/or merit-based scholarships. Students must apply for financial aid to be considered for any type of loan or need-based scholarship. A student begins the financial aid process by filling out the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). The FAFSA is available in two forms: electronic at www.fafsa.ed.gov and paper (A paper copy FAFSA is available in the College of Law Admissions and Financial Aid Office). Financial aid is granted on an annual basis and awards are subject to student eligibility and availability of funds.
SOURCES OF ASSISTANCE
Institutional Resources
Private Law Firm Merit-Based
Scholarship • Greenberg, Traurig, LLP
Greenberg, Traurig, a national law firm based in Miami, has established a scholarship to benefit one outstanding full-time law student. Selection by the scholarship committee is based upon undergraduate grade point average and LSAT scores. No separate application is required.
The Honorable Judge Mario P. Goderich Merit Scholarship • This scholarship is sponsored by the Cuban American Bar Association and is awarded to a student who has obtained a law school record of academic distinction and demonstrated a commitment to service oriented activities through research, writing and/or advocacy on behalf of the Cuban American community. Selection is made by the Cuban American Bar Association Scholarship Committee.
Dean's Scholars Scholarship Program • The Dean's Scholars Scholarship Program is a merit-based full tuition grant. Funds are available to full-time students. Selection by the scholarship committee is based upon undergraduate grade point average and LSAT scores. While we will attempt to identify the resources to continue the scholarship into the subsequent academic years for recipients who perform well in law school, we can not be certain that we will be able to do so. In planning the financing of your legal education, you hence should plan on this as a one-year scholarship only.
Law Need-Based Grants • Awards are based on financial need and
are available to both full-time and part-time students. You must
apply for financial aid. Funds are limited and you are encouraged
to complete your financial aid applications by February
15, 2008.
Graduate Need-Based Grants • Students whose files are completed
accurately by FIU's financial aid application priority date of February
15, 2008, will receive priority consideration for this institutional
grant. This need-based grant requires full-time enrollment and funds
are limited.
LOANS
Federal Loan Program • Students must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid to be considered for federal loan or work-study programs. The College of Law participates in the Federal Family Education Loan Program (FFELP), which includes the Stafford Loan. Stafford Loans can be borrowed directly through banks, credit unions and other lenders.
Federal Stafford Loans
(Subsidized) Federal Stafford Loans • Students must demonstrate financial need. Up to $8,500 a year can be borrowed through this program. The federal government will pay the interest while you are enrolled as at least half-time status. Repayment on the loan begins six months after graduation, withdrawal, or dropping below half-time status.
(Unsubsidized) Federal Stafford Loans • These loans are not based upon financial need. Funds through this program are available to students who do not qualify in whole or in part for the subsidized Federal Stafford loan. In combination with the subsidized loan, a student can borrow up to $18,500 a year. Students are responsible for paying interest while in school or a request may be made that the interest be added to the loan principal to be paid after leaving school or dropping below half-time status.
Private Loan Programs • Eligibility for these loans are based solely upon a student's credit history. Students should request a copy of their credit report and check it for any errors prior to submitting an application for a private loan. An application can be requested directly from a private lender of choice.
