“The Intersection of United States Constitutional Law with International and Foreign Law” Symposium
On Thursday afternoon, speakers will explore the context of America’s constitutionally based civil rights and the internationally protected human rights identified in the Geneva conventions and other international treaties and conventions. They will consider the appropriate balance between a nation defending its perceived interests and it recognizing international norms in guiding its behavior toward foreign captives and alleged enemies of the state.
On Friday morning, speakers will focus on the debate over America’s courts using foreign law sources to help inform its definitions of due process, equal protection, and other concepts from the United States constitution. The discussion will include a comparative consideration of the way Canadian courts deal with the same subject.
