Dear 1L Evening Student:

We hope your summer is going well. Florida International University’s College of Law is preparing for your arrival on Wednesday, August 8th, 2012. Check-in for Orientation begins Wednesday, August 8th, 2012, at 1:30pm. The Day and Evening Orientation programs have been combined. We understand that this might pose a slight inconvenience for some of the evening students. However, this is a one-time altering of your normal school schedule. Please report to Rafael Diaz-Balart Hall which is located directly across the street from the U.S. Century Bank Arena. During check-in, you will receive an Orientation packet and additional information on the week’s activities.  This tentative orientation schedule  provides you with important information to help plan your time during those first hectic days. We will supply you with a revised final schedule during the Orientation check-in.

Here are several reminders and some general information:

  1. Orientation Fee:   The College of Law requires that all incoming students pay a $150.00 Orientation Fee which covers, in part, the programming costs associated with the First Year Academic, Ethics, and Professional Training (“ADEPT”) Program. The check should be made payable to Florida International University. Additionally, this check must be separate from your tuition payment and should be returned to: Ms. Virginie Illescas, Florida International University College of Law, RDB 1043, Modesto Maidique Campus, Miami, Florida 33199, by June 15, 2012. (Note: Please include your name in the memo portion of the check).
  2. Orientation Reading Assignments: You have been provided with a link to the following cases Lindh v. Surman, 742 A.2D 643 (1999) and Lenawee County Board of Health v. Messerly, 417 Mich. 17, 331 N.W.2d 203 (1982). Please read prior to orientation and be prepared to discuss it in detail.

Seminars and workshops will be led by our faculty as well as the following administrative departments: Academic Support, Career Development, Legal Skills and Values, Student Services, Legal Clinics, Externships, and the Center for Professionalism and Ethics.
  4.
