Every fall semester, commencing in September, law firms and other organizations come on campus to interview second- and third-year students for summer associate positions and permanent placement after graduation, respectively. In order to participate in OCI, students must submit all of the materials requested by each employer by the specific deadline. The Office of Career Planning and Placement staff is available all summer to discuss which employers you should target and to assist you in updating your resume in time for your return to school.
RESUME PREPARATION
To assist you in preparing your resume, review the Resume handout available in the CPPO and on our Web site: _______________________________. Once you have a resume that is conformed to professional legal standards, the CPPO staff will be pleased to review your resume and offer suggestions and improvements, if necessary. If you cannot make an appointment for resume review, you may drop your resume off or e-mail it to cardev@nsu.law.nova.edu .We will review your resume and return it to you as quickly as possible.
PREPARATION FOR INTERVIEWS
• You must do all you can to prepare for your interview. Review the firm's entry in Martindale-Hubbell, www.martindale.com. to see the names and credentials of the attorneys, firm specialties, representative clients, locations of offices, etc.
• Research employers through eAttorney. Since partnering with Martindale-Hubbell, many firms in eAttorney will be linked to Martindale. However, not all law firms have a Martindale directory listing. Using a firm’s own Web site is a good way to research the firm, its attorneys, clients, etc. Many employers' profiles list links to their own Web sites. This is a great resource for background on the employer and on individual attorneys.
• Firm brochures and NALP information (National Association for Law Placement) are available in the CPPO and the Law Library.
• Go to NALP's online Directory of Legal Employers at www.nalpdirectory.com for information about the employers, their hiring practices, salary structures, diversity and a great deal more.
• Search for the firm's or attorney's name in Lexis/Nexis, Westlaw and other Web sites to determine whether the employer has been involved in any high-profile cases in recent months or years.
• Go to www.lawperiscope.com for additional information about law firms' practice areas, their client lists and other background.
• Read the CPPO's Interview handout (also available on our Web site) and other publications on interviewing tips.
• Participate in the CPPO Mock Interview Marathon and/or make an appointment with CPPO staff to do a mock interview which can be videotaped at your request.
• Be prepared to discuss your resume. Make sure that job titles and descriptions are accurate and that your GPA,, class rank, honors and awards can be verified or documented. Be certain that your resume indicates a current address, telephone numbers and email address.
APPROPRIATE INTERVIEW ATTIRE
• It is important to remember that most legal employers are conservative. Thus, it is best to err on the side of modesty. Men and women should wear suits. Make sure that your interview suit and shirt are freshly cleaned and pressed. Pants and skirts should be an appropriate length (please, no skirts more than one inch above the knees). If you have any questions about what to wear for interviews, the CPPO staff can help.
• For a more detailed view of how to prepare for your interview, please pick up the Interview handout at the CPPO or find it at:
ATTENDING INTERVIEWS
IF YOU ARE SELECTED FOR AN INTERVIEW AND HAVE SIGNED UP FOR AN INTERVIEW SLOT, YOU MUST INTERVIEW. CANCELLATIONS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED. ONCE YOU HAVE BEEN SELECTED FOR AN INTERVIEW, YOU ARE OBLIGATED TO SIGN UP AND ATTEND THE INTERVIEW.
• If you sign up for an interview slot and fail to appear for that interview, you must submit a formal letter of apology to the employer with copies to the Dean and to the CPPO within 48 hours of your originally scheduled interview. Failure to act in a professional manner may result in your not being permitted to participate in other on-campus interviews.
• If the employer with whom you are interviewing has requested materials other than a resume, you must bring those materials with you to the interview. Also, have extra copies of your resume, transcript, references and brief writing sample, in case you have more than one interviewer. Unless otherwise indicated, you may assume that transcripts requested may be "unofficial". Check your email regularly for additional materials or requirements requested by employers.
• Please keep current with your email and always read each issue of CPPO DICTA. Employers and programs are often added or deleted from the OCI schedule. You do not want not to miss important employment information.
