Ana Crucet Recognized as “Community Advocate of the Year”

The director of the Legal Studies Institute at Florida International University, Ana Crucet, has been awarded Community Advocate of the Year for Miami-Dade County by the Guardian ad Litem Program. Crucet, who has served as a Guardian ad Litem since 1994, was chosen for her exemplary service to abused and neglected children of the South Florida community.

Since 2010, Ana Crucet has served as the Chair of the Guardian Ad Litem Program Volunteers Advisory Council (VAC) and member of the Director’s Advisory Council for the 11th Judicial Circuit.

“As the Chair of our Volunteer Advisory Committee, Ana Crucet has gone from advocating for Miami Dade’s abused, abandoned and neglected children to speaking up on how to make our program better. Ana’s enthusiasm never falters and she is constantly finding new and innovative ways to get the Guardian ad Litem’s message across, no matter how big or small her audience may be. Ana always goes above and beyond what is expected of her. She is a great team player and always makes time for whatever her role as Committee Chair asks of her. Her knowledge of the program and the population that we work with has been so beneficial in what she presents to the community. We are so proud to have Ana not only as a child advocate, but as a community advocate,” said Sonia Ferrer, Circuit Director, Guardian Ad Litem Program for the 11th Judicial Circuit.

“I feel honored to have received this award that is very meaningful to me on many levels. First, it is a nice recognition of my ongoing contribution being the voice of children who cannot speak and advocate for themselves. I also have the opportunity to give back to a community where I have set my roots for over 50 years. In addition, this award is a lovely recognition for the Legal Studies Institute because of the emphasis our program places on the importance of pro-bono services, and advocacy for the underprivileged. This award acknowledges the value of this instruction that we impart to our students” said Crucet.
